Adopting a holistic and systems-strengthening approach to healthcare, the initiative works towards improving maternal and child health outcomes across Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, and Rajasthan. The ‘Mother & Child program’ has an overall objective to reduce MMR and IMR in the adopted villages, with a focus on improving demand, access, and quality of maternal and child healthcare, aligned with the goal of near-zero maternal and infant mortality.
The program integrates Mobile Health Units (MHUs) and community health worker capacity building to ensure last-mile service delivery. MHUs provide doorstep antenatal and postnatal care, gynaecological consultations, diagnostics, and health counselling, with a focus on early identification and referral of high-risk pregnancies. Tele-calling and tele-counselling further strengthen follow-up and continuity of care.
Complementing this, structured ASHA and Anganwadi mentoring models enhance the capacity of community health workers through continuous handholding, improving service delivery, community engagement, and health outcomes. By strengthening both community demand and public health systems, the initiative enables sustained improvements in maternal and child health.
DCM Shriram has a holistic approach to healthcare. The Mother & Child program aims to reduce the MMR and IMR in the adopted villages across Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, and Rajasthan.
To extend the program’s reach, six Mobile Health Units (MHUs) operate across Hariawan, Pasgawan, Todarpur, and Barkhani Blocks in Uttar Pradesh; Jhagadia Block in Gujarat; and Ladpura Block in Rajasthan. Equipped with medical professionals and diagnostic tools, these MHUs deliver doorstep ANC and PNC care, with a strong focus on identifying and referring High-Risk Pregnancies (HRP). The vans also provide gynaecological consultations, health education, and counselling—ensuring rural women receive consistent, quality healthcare.
To strengthen follow-up and support for pregnant women, especially those identified as high-risk, the program has also introduced tele calling and tele counselling components. Two trained female staff provide regular tele calling support for counselling and follow-up of HRP women who visit the MHUs. Additionally, during PMSMA (Pradhan Mantri Surakshit Matritva Abhiyan) days, tele counselling is facilitated from centres within PHC/CHC premises, helping address individual concerns and ensuring continuity of care.
To strengthen frontline service delivery and improve maternal and child health outcomes, a structured Community Health Worker (CHW) Mentoring approach is implemented through two distinct models. In Uttar Pradesh, the ASHA Mentoring model focuses on building the capacity of ASHAs through a cadre of trained ASHA Mentors who provide continuous handholding support on planning, record-keeping, home visits, and community engagement—enhancing the quality of maternal and child healthcare services.
In Jhagadia, Gujarat, the model expands to include both ASHA and Anganwadi workers, with a strong focus on the critical first 1000 days of life—from pregnancy to a child’s second birthday. Through integrated training and mentorship, frontline workers are equipped to improve nutrition practices, early childhood care, and service delivery. Together, these models strengthen community-level systems and contribute to sustained improvements in maternal and child health outcomes.
