Justice (Retd.) Sanjay Kishan Kaul is a graduate in Economics (Hons.) from St. Stephens College, Delhi University and holds LL.B. Degree from The Campus Law Centre, Delhi University and is enrolled as an Advocate with the Bar Council of Delhi.
In the past he has been Advocate-on-Record of the Supreme Court of India and was subsequently designated as the Senior Advocate. He had served as Judge of the High Court of Delhi and subsequently became Acting Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court. He had also been the Chief Justice of Punjab & Haryana High Court and Madras High Court. In the year 2017, he was appointed as a Judge of the Supreme Court. He was the senior-most Judge of the Supreme Court after the Chief Justice and headed National Legal Services Authority (NALSA), Mediation and Conciliation Project Committee (MCPC) of the Supreme Court amongst others. While being the Executive Chairman of NALSA, he spearheaded the ‘1st Regional Conference on Access to Legal Aid Strengthening Access to Justice in the Global South’ held in 2023 with the support of the Government of India in collaboration with International Legal Foundation (ILF), United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).
Recently, he has been appointed as one of the International Judge of The Bahrain International Commercial Court.
